You can now access the map in your journal, which will reveal the area around you as you explore.
As you explore, you should experience a smoother experience. Much of the optimization work is done, and I'm now getting around 90 fps in towns and 120+ fps in the wilderness.

Research and XP - July 9 Weekly Devlogs
There's a new update, retooling and simplifying research.
Now instead of breaking down items to research their components, you gain XP by discovering and collecting new items. Same basic idea, but a little more streamlined and easier to figure out for new players. There's also a couple new items added and some further optimizations.
Patch Notes * Resarch now uses XP, which is gained from discovering new items, farming, and defeating enemies * Added Sunglasses, can be crafted at a tinker table * Added Ancient Thesaurus, can be found in gifts * Tileset optimization
The Underside - July 19 Weekly Devlogs
The underside is deep, deep underground.
The deepest part. It's a dangerous land of obsidian and lava where eventually the strongest materials and enemies live.
Patch Notes * Added the Underside, a dangerous world deep underground * Added debuff when in owned territory * Fixed most cases where attacks wouldn't hit properly * Reduced villager jumping * Fixed ocean being at a weird elevation
