Action Rolls. 1d6: 6 = Succeed, 4-5 = Problem, 1-3 = Failure. Impact determines degree of success.
Boost = +1d6. Kick = +Impact
Group Rolls. 1 PC rolls, but everyone adds Boosts and Kicks. Problems affect everyone.
Dare. You: Boost, Kick, or clear 1 trouble. If: GM +1 Bite, Suggest Problem, or mark 1 trouble.
Problems. A Snag or Slam.
Snag. A complication, an alarm, a collapse, an ex shows up, the monster mutates.
Slam. Damage, bruised, exhausted, freaking out, humiliating, glitching device. Add to slam box, if full then Disaster. Cleared at end of run.
Nope. Mark 2 trouble to avoid a Slam (describe it).
Trouble. Disaster on 8th trouble. Clear with downtime Beats.
Disaster. Rolled at end of run, and when trouble/slams full. 1d6 per empty box. 6 = +1 style, 4-5 = +1 trouble, 1-3 = +1 doom.
Doom. Permanent scars (describe it), determines epilogue. Cleared by beats, or a special run.
Fractures. Crew scars (describe it), when full the crew breaks up: +1 doom for all + leave. Reconciliation requires 1 to sacrifice: -1 legacy or +1 doom.
Style. XP, earned from Tricks. Spent on Beats. Crew style is split or buys Fame (76).
Tricks. Success = +1 Style, Fail = Worse Problems. More Kick = +1 Style. (Desperate Action in BitD)
Beats. Unlock new traits, legacy, doom during downtime. Listed by role (42-50) or universal (24)
GM 🔗
Start in the action during a run, or start in town and their day-to-day lives.
Bite. Gain 1 Bite per PC. Use them up before the run concludes.
Spend 1 bite: add a surprise problem (148), cut to the crew over their heads, advance a clock
Spend 2 bite: make a PC roll disaster, add a random challenge (27)
- Set a couple obstacles to overcome for a prize.
- Explore, talk to NPCs.
- Twist or threat that changes the nature of the run.
- End with a big fight or chase.
- Disaster rolls as they head home into downtime.
Clocks. Typically 4-6. Success marks 1, +Impact = +1.
Obstacles. Location is hidden or secret. Path is difficult, treacherous, blocked, well-guarded. Difficult tasks, surviving dangerous situation, winning tough competition. A threat is showing up, time is running out.
Checkpoints. Listed by location (81, 96-112) like fence, river, gap, etc.
Snags. An unexpected obstacle or threat is revealed. Things get more complicated, start or extend a clock. Things become more dangerous, all future problems are worse. A big twist changes the nature of things. An asset is lost.
Slams. Banged up, bruised, sprain, scratched, roasted, slimed, exhausted. Stressed, upset, humiliated, distracted, confused. Warping, unraveling. Drained cell, glitching software, cracked screen, broken gun. Temporary: pinned, grappled, stuck, dangling.
Worse Problems. 2 problems, everyone slammed, super slammed (2x to clear or nope).
Disasters (Doom, 155). Injury (need hospital). Lose signature device. Peelback damage or accident. Captured. Personal (dumped, parent leaves, embarassing leak). PCs can veto or write their own.
Chases. 3-5 checkpoints. 3-5 clock, on fill a severe consequence. Action to move through each checkpoint quickly, 1-3 is slow (fill clock) + problem.
Fights. Each approach has its own clock (blast it, cave-in, disarm, etc.). Problems at start, then slams. Immunities or super slams increase difficulty.
Social. Use multiple clocks ("Impress Sponsor", "Sponsor Leaves", and "Mavens Annoyed")
Downtime. What beats? What's the situation? Where is it? What's it look like? What are you doing? Who else is here? Who should play them? What are they like? What's said? What's seen? How does everyone feel? How does that manifest? Is there more to answer?
Exploration Problems. 1. Going to take longer and need extra steps. 2. Storm brews, monster stirs, sun sets, sirens echo. 3. More dangerous than you thought (worse problems). 4. Drawn attention, woken something, looming threat. 5. Things aren't what you thought, this hill is a turtle, the cave is a mouth, this is a trap/conspiracy. 6. Slam (tired, hungry, shinner, concussed, broken gear).
Infiltration Problems. Like a slow chase. 1. Unexpected sentries, fences, firewalls, keylocks, counter-hacks, motion sensors. 2. A guard moves nearby, a sleeping monster rolls into your path. 3. Floor creaks, spotlight sweeps near, power core fluctuates, you risk tripping sensor. 4. Alarm rings, twig snaps, items clatter, the hunt is on. 5. Trapped in an awkward spot, enter dangerous room, trigger trap, find something you shouldn't. 6. Slam (frazzled, bleary, on the brink).
Chase Problems. 1. Finish must be found, opened, unlocked, etc. 2. Foe gets ranged weapon, boosted speed, psionic power. 3. Path blocked, GM adds new checkpoints. 4. Powercell dying, drop something important, path needs clearing. 5. Slam (attacked, fall, exhaustion). 6. Hazard ahead slams everyone.
Fight Problems. 1. They have thick skin, regeneration, forcefield, tougher than expected. 2. More foes, new clock, starts charging blast, worse threat looms. 3. You lose weapon, unexpected defense, terrain shifts, a twist. 4. Grows 2nd head, has venomous stinger, transforms bigger, more dangerous and worse problems. 5. Slam (slimed, jacked up). 6. Slam everyone (acid splash, huge swing, energy blast)
Social Problems. 1. Gets awkward, cold, tense, hostile. 2. Must first explain yourself, answer tough questions, do a favor, talk to others. 3. A twist, a set up, you learn new info that changes things. 4. Time is running out, losing interest, wi-fi failing, interruption nears. 5. Slam (stressed, flustered, confused, embarassed, angry). 6.
